Shelfie #5: Alissa McArthur: Room Editors Show Off Their Reading Spaces

Getting a peek of an avid reader’s bookshelf is one of life’s simple pleasures. If you’ve ever shown up at a house party and gone straight to the host’s bookshelf, you know how satisfying it is to snoop through other readers’ libraries. The editors of Room love reading (obviously), and we’re giving you a glimpse of our shelves and sharing how we get the most out of our sacred reading time.

Check out Room’s Alissa McArthur’s reading space!

What makes a great reading space?

Coziness! If I had more light in my bedroom I would probably always read there. I like being surrounded by blankets and pillows. Once I lived in an apartment with a day bed—it was magical.

Do you like to organize or display your books in a particular way?

On one of my bookshelves, I have my books organized by colour. I find it very calming. I have another shelf that doesn’t look quite so pretty. Strewn about my place I tend to have library books and ARCs I’ve brought home from work.

What are your reading rituals?

Tea or coffee is a must. If I’m at home, I’ll put on some nice ambient music. Otherwise, I’ll head to a coffee shop.

ROOM 49.1 No Future for Who?

In Room Magazine 49.1 No Future for Who?, we are really asking. We are coming in hot. We are causing a scene. We are being unreasonable. We are not fucking around. We are not taking “no” for an answer. “No” is the only word we still know. For who? For who? No.
