Room’s Winter 2017-18 Short Forms Contest Winners

Congratulations to the two first-place winners and the honourable mention, as chosen by judge Jane Eaton Hamilton.

 

1st Place: “Sissi Barra: the way of smoke” by Cara Waterfall

Ottawa-born and Costa Rica-based, Cara’s work has been featured or is forthcoming in Event, The Fiddlehead and Oratorealis. She was shortlisted for Freefall Magazine’s 2016 Poetry Contest, and longlisted for Room Magazine’s 2017 Poetry contest. She has a diploma in Poetry & Lyric Discourse from The Writer’s Studio at SFU.

1st Place: “A Good Molar is Hard to Find” by Katie McGarry

Katie McGarry lives in Waterloo and is enrolled in The Writer’s Studio Online 2018 through Simon Fraser University. Her writing is forthcoming in The Humber Literary Review, filling Station, and GUSH: Menstrual Manifestos for Our Time (Frontenac House, Spring 2018).

Honourable Mention: “Patchwork” by Justina Elias

Justina Elias grew up in Winnipeg and holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Guelph. She works as a bookseller in Victoria, BC.
