Room Magazine is pleased to announce the winners of our inaugural Short Forms Contest as chosen by judge Jen Sookfong Lee. Room would like to extend our gratitude to our every writer who shared with us their work, and to Lee for contributing her time to judge the annual contest. The two winning entries will be published in Room 40.4 (Winter 2017/18), along with the judge’s insight on her top picks. Don’t want to wait that long to read a winning entry? SHORT FORMS WINNERS

“Crushed Candy” by Andrea MacPherson

Andrea MacPherson is the author of six books: three novels, What We Once BelievedBeyond the Blue, and When She Was Electric, and three poetry collections, EllipsesAway, and Natural Disasters. Currently an Associate Professor at the University of the Fraser Valley, Andrea teaches creative writing and literature.

“Hamza” by Hajer Mirwali

Hajer Mirwali has a BA in Creative Writing from York University where she served as Executive Editor of Existere. She is a Poetry Reader for The Puritan. Her work has appeared in Maclean’s and Brick.
 

SHORT FORMS HONOURABLE MENTION

“Higher Math” by Laura Foley

Laura Foley is the author of six poetry collections, including WTF and Night Ringing. Her poem “Gratitude List” won the Common Good Books contest, judged by Garrison Keillor; “Nine Ways of Looking at Light” won the Outermost Contest, judged by Marge Piercy. She lives with her partner and three big dogs among the hills of Vermont. Find her at laurafoley.net.
