This book, which is made up of equal parts memoir, biography, and cookbook, documents the author’s experience cooking her way through Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking over the course of a year. Powell devotes each chapter to one recipe from Childs’s cookbook. She intertwines her own struggles (as Powell cooks her way through Mastering the Art of French Cooking, we see her deal with a dead-end career and a crumbling marriage, not to mention the trauma that goes along with boiling lobsters alive and eating a seemingly-endless parade of aspics) and stories about Julia Childs’s life with the recipes throughout the book, creating an intimate relationship between these two women who have never met but are bonded by the shared experience of cooking from the same recipe.
