Room Magazine is Canada’s oldest feminist literary magazine, published quarterly since 1975. Room publishes literature, art, and criticism by cis and trans women, trans men, Two-Spirit, and nonbinary people, and is committed to an intersectional feminist mandate centring 2SLGBTQIA+, BIPOC, and disabled voices.

With the support of the Magazine Association of BC, we are offering a 330-hour, part-time paid internship at a rate of $23.00/hr for 15 hours per week, paid bi-weekly from Monday, July 13, 2026 to Friday, December 18, 2026.

The intern will spend 50% of their time coordinating Room’s 2026 Fiction and Short Forms contests and 50% of their time assisting the Managing Editor and Marketing Lead in planning Room’s 50th anniversary celebration (Fall 2026, exact date TBC).

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attend monthly Room staff meetings
  • Coordinate Room’s 2026 Fiction and Short Forms contests, including the following tasks:
    •   Manage contest production schedule, including deadlines for submissions, reading periods, judges decisions, and winners announcements
    • Create and upload contest-related content to Room’s website
    • Submit judge honoraria and prize winner invoices
    • Track submission statistics and keep contest coordinator manual up-to-date
    • Compile a list of potential judges for upcoming contests
  • Assist with various tasks during the lead-up to the 50th anniversary event, which may include some or all of the following tasks:
    • Print and organize necessary documents (e.g. sales sheets, signage)
    • Work with the marketing lead on paid and organic event promotion
    •  Solicit and coordinate participating market vendors
    •  File performer contracts
    • Purchase and compile supplies and catering
    • Coordinate volunteers
    • Research venue and performance accessibility information
    • Assist with venue set-up and take-down
    • Take merchandise and issue sales inventory
    • Track expenses and income and keep budget documents updated
    • Coordinate a post-event survey and organize data
    • Draft final report for funders
  • Assist managing editor with manual updates, meeting prep, and other admin tasks
  • Additional editorial responsibilities: proofreading the magazine, reading slush pile submissions, shadowing an editor during the production of an issue of the magazine

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • High school diploma
  • Currently registered in, or a recent graduate of (within 3 years), a post-secondary program in English, Creative Writing, Publishing, Marketing, or a similar discipline
  • Based in the Metro Vancouver area with the ability to periodically work in-person at Room’s Mount Pleasant office (24 W 4th Ave, Vancouver BC), particularly in the weeks leading up to the 50th anniversary event
  • A commitment to Room’s intersectional feminism and anti-oppressive values
  • Demonstrated passion for literature and magazine publishing
  • Strong organizational skills, the ability to meet deadlines and communicate capacity, and a willingness to ask for help
  • Excellent reading and writing skills in English

Asset

  • Knowledge of Canadian literature and familiarity with BC’s independent publishing scene
  • Working knowledge of any, or all, of the above-listed online management software
  • Event planning experience
