We are currently looking for volunteers in Vancouver and the surrounding areas. If you are interested in working on events for Room in other cities, please reach out to the publisher at outreach[at]roommagazine[dot]com.
Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Room events! Room hosts or attends up to ten events per year. We often celebrate our quarterly issues with launch parties featuring readers from the issue and guest artists, and we partner with organizations like Unbound Reading Series and Indigenous Brilliance to put on readings, open mics, workshops, and more. We also run tables at local markets such as Word Vancouver Reading & Writing Festival and Car Free Days Festivals.
What does being an event volunteer with Room mean?
Our nonprofit has a mighty but very small core staff of 3 people, and the Publisher is solely responsible for events, so we are often lacking hands! At readings and open mics, we need volunteers to help greet performers, oversee ticketed entry, monitor Zoom questions and chats, sell issues of Room, support tech set-up, and other miscellaneous tasks. At market tables, we need volunteers to help with set-up and tear-down of the table and tent and to sell issues of Room when the staff take short breaks. We need reliable volunteers able to attend two or more Room events per year to help us out!
What’s in it for you?
Any time you volunteer at an event, you’ll get to take home a free Room issue of your choice. Once you’ve volunteered at two events, you’ll also receive a free subscription to Room for the year, which will renew as long as you keep volunteering at two or more events per year.
Being an event volunteer is a great way to join Room’s vibrant community of editors, writers, and readers. Our volunteers are the first to hear about our internships, partnership program openings, and other opportunities, and a history of work with us often goes a long way when applying. Volunteering with us is also a great way to learn about the publishing industry. You’ll meet writers who have been published in our pages, our publisher and managing editor, and members of our editorial collective at the events. At market tables, you’ll find there is a lot of down time to ask the staff about any questions you might have. The markets we table at also have dozens to hundreds of other wonderful vendors, artisans, and nonprofits at their own tables, and you’re welcome to take breaks to browse the market.
If you’d like to volunteer with us, please answer a few questions below so we can see if we’ll be a good fit. We’ll reach out within a few weeks. We look forward to hearing from you!
