Room Magazine is pleased to announce the winners of our 2017 Creative Nonfiction Contest as chosen by judge Carmen Aguirre. Room would like to extend our gratitude to our every writer who shared with us their work, and to Aguirre for contributing her time to judge the annual contest. The first and second place entries will be published in Room 40.4 (Winter 2017/18), along with the judge’s comments on her top picks. Don’t want to wait that long to read a winning entry? CREATIVE NONFICTION CONTEST WINNERS

 

First Place: “A Map of the World” by Rowan Smith-McCandless

Storyteller, thrift-store junkie and chai tea lover, Rowan Smith-McCandless writes and lives in Winnipeg. In 2015, her short story “Whale Song” placed second in Room magazine’s Annual Poetry and Fiction Contest. Most recently, her short story “Castaways” placed second in Prairie Fire‘s 2016 Fiction Contest.

 

 

Second Place: “Cake” by Kate Balfour

Kate Balfour is a writer who grew up on the unceded traditional territory of the Okanagan people. Her work has appeared in Baldhip and Room, and her poem “Castle” was nominated for the 2017 Pushcart Prize.

 

 

Honourable Mention: “A Year for Ectoplasm” by Emily Kellogg

Emily Kellogg is a Toronto-based writer and amateur tap dancer. Find her writing in (parenthetical)She Does the City, The Wall Street JournalShameless Magazine, and The Huffington Post.
