Top 5 Questions from AWP

Top 5 Questions for Room at AWP16

For the first time ever, Room magazine attended AWP this past April in Los Angeles. We sat in the bustling book fair in the Convention Centre among hundreds of tables where we shared our upcoming calls for submissions, contest deadlines, and, of course, our journal.

Everyday the Roomies at our table answered excellent questions about Room. Curious what people wanted to know? Take a look:

1.     Where are you from?

Canada! We are a collective of volunteers from Vancouver, Victoria, Toronto, and Montreal. We produce our journal via a digital office made up of Box.com, Trello, and video conference meetings.

2.     How long have you been publishing?

Room magazine has been promoting Art, Literature and Feminism since 1975 and we’ve been publishing for over 40 years! We’re a print journal but have been publishing more and more content on RoomMagazine.com and have recently added a digital version of the print issue.

3.     I‘ve never been published before, can I submit?

Absolutely. Room has been home to a number of first publishing credits. We accept submissions all year round and hold contests multiple times per year in different genres. This past year our creative non-fiction winner Serena Shipp earned her first writing credit when her piece “Fishing” was published in 38.4 Fieldwork. We read everything and look to see how it can fit in our journal, and don’t worry too much about what previous credits you have.

4.     Can I submit artwork?

Yes! The same as our literary submissions — artists are invited to submit with the posted call, whether it’s themed or un-themed. We welcome pieces from artists working in all different mediums. We print the inside of the journal in black and white, but the front cover is always in colour.

5.     Do you pay?

Yes we do! Room has provided writer and artist honourariums for decades. We would love to pay more, but for now we also give our contributors a free one-year subscription to the journal plus extra contributor copies.
