Room of One’s Own is pleased to present the winning entries from our latest fiction and poetry contest. Once again, we were able to find superior judges: Madeline Sonik for poetry and Aislinn Hunter for fiction. Aislinn is the author of the novel Stay, and Madeline writes children’s books and edits anthologies. Both women are acclaimed poets. Madeline’s selection for first-place poetry goes to Kathy Para for “thin.” Aislinn’s choice for first-place fiction goes to Renate M. Mohr for “Nonsense and Absence.”

COVER ARTIST’S STATEMENT

I enjoy layering media to create a painting with multiple images and meanings. People, plants, animals, and everyday situations inspire me. I always hope the viewer might feel a moment of connection or humour when they see one of my paintings.
