An Interview with Whitney French: Room's Mentor-in-Residence

We are thrilled to announce Whitney French as Room’s Mentor-in-Residence!

Room’s mentor-in-residence program is a brand new program designed to pair established mentors with emerging writers. This year’s mentor, Whitney French, will mentor about eight students (free of charge to the student) over the year of the residency, including manuscript feedback and career advice and support. Publisher, Nav Nagra, will act as the coordinator of this program, and as the mentor’s assistant and mentor-in-training.

Room Magazine is moving into its next chapter with a new publisher. Nav Nagra has assumed the role of publisher as of November 14, 2019. Nagra brings to the role a variety of skills and experiences in nonprofit management. As the communications manager and diversity and inclusion facilitator at Vantage Point, Nagra has had the pleasure of working with many organizations to find their path to better inclusion and equitable practices including as a consultant with Breathing Space Creative.

Terese Marie Mailhot’s Heart Berries has been loved by all since its debut. A New York Times bestseller, Heart Berries was a finalist for the Governor General's Literary Award for English-Language Nonfiction, was selected by no other than Emma Watson as the Our Shared Shelf Book Club Pick for March/April 2018. Terese Marie Mailhot’s work has appeared in Guernica, Pacific Standard, Granta, Mother Jones, Medium, the Los Angeles Times, and elsewhere. She is the recipient of a 2019 Whiting Award, the Electra Quinney Award for Published Stories, a Clara Johnson Award, and she is also the recipient of the Spalding Prize for the Promotion of Peace and Justice in Literature. Room is honoured to have Terese Marie Mailhot judge our 2019 Creative Non-Fiction Contest and we were beyond thrilled to sit down for a chat.

Vivek Shraya is an artist. Fluent in many mediums including music and the written word, Shraya is also the author of even this page is white, She of the Mountains and her upcoming book I’m Afraid of Men. Shraya released her album Part-Time Woman in 2017 and is one half of the music duo Too Attached, who blew the roof off Room Magazine’s Growing Room 2018 Festival Launch Party earlier this year. I had the pleasure of meeting the powerhouse that is Vivek Shraya at that launch party and jumped at the chance to speak with her again.

An Interview with Nav Nagra, Editor of Issue 40.3 "Migration"

Nav Nagra, who has been an editorial board member and the advertising coordinator at Room since 2014, will be editing an upcoming issue of the magazine on migration. Nav has written poetry and reviews for Project Space, Sad Magazine, Lemon Hound, Room, and the New Vancouver Poets Folio. Kayi Wong spoke to Nav about why she chose migration as a theme, and how reading submissions have changed the way she reads and writes.
