Welcome to CanLit Shout Outs, Room's new monthly blog series. On the first Sunday of every month, I will post a list of recent publications, awards, and other literary accomplishments by past and present Room contributors, board members, contest judges, interviewees, and friends. Think of this as a "what's-awesome-in-CanLit" celebration by someone who likes books a little too much, or, better yet, as your monthly feminist shopping list.
If you fit the description above, and you want me to share news about your latest book, contest win, etcetera, in next month's Shout Outs, feel free to tweet us @RoomMagazine, ideally on the Friday / Saturday before the first Sunday of the month, for memory reasons.
THIS MONTH'S SHOUT OUTS
Shout out to (in no particular order):
Jen Sookfong Lee (Room 39.2, 39.4 contributor, and our Short Forms judge for 2017), whose new novel, The Conjoined, comes out this month with ECW Press! (You can also buy a signed copy through our 40th Anniversary Anthology IndieGoGo campaign).
Jocelyn Tennant (Room 39.3), who has a new story up on Joyland.
Ruth Daniell (37.3), for winning The New Quarterly's Nick Blatchford Occasional Verse contest.
Bonnie Nish (former Room editorial board member) who just released an anthology called Concussion and Mild Brain Injury: Not Just Another Headline with LA Publishing.
Mahak Jain (37.4), Carleigh Baker (forthcoming in Room 40.2), and Souvankham Thammavongsa (38.1) for making the Journey Prize long-list. Mahak's story “The Origin of Jaanvi”, was originally published in Joyland, Carleigh's story, "Chins and Elbows" was published in subTerrain, and Souvankham's story "Mani Pedi" is from The Puritan.
Terri Brandmueller (current Room board member) for winning third place in Ambit magazine's flash fiction contest.
Adele Barclay (Room book reviewer) for winning Matrix Magazine's Lit Pop poetry contest! And to Ariel Gordon (Room 25.4, 36.1) and Shannon Webb-Campbell (Room book reviewer, and contributor to issue 32.1) for making the short list.
Our beloved managing editor Chelene Knight and contributor Mallory Tater (39.2), who just had collections of poetry acquired by BookThug. (Both books won't be out for a while, but we published the eponymous poem from Mallory's collection, so double cheers there).
Speaking of Chelene Knight, don't forget to check out her Can't Lit interview!
Amber Dawn (30.2, 35.4, 39.3, and now one of our readers!) who recently took over as the director of Thursday's Writing Collective at Carnegie.
Danielle Daniel (38.2), whose memoir, The Dependent, comes out with Latitude 46 Publishing this month!
Doretta Lau (38.3, 2016 fiction contest judge), for launching her insightful blog on health, wellness, and writing.
Meghan Bell is the publisher and graphic designer of Room magazine.
