A series in which Isabella is excited about everything that is happening at Growing Room 2019, so she sat down with some festival authors to hear about their work, and what events they are most excited to take part in.
Gibson is a Vancouver-based artist and educator whose work plunges into the fraught territory of school texts and history books with a sewing needle and re-works historical Canadian texts with black thread in order to revise our ideas of history, nationhood, and how we read. Through altered book sculptures that ensnare the texts with braids and thread, redacted texts, and reprints of old children’s readers, Gibson’s work asks us to consider the voices, stories, and bodies that have been erased or excluded from historical narratives and proposes material ways in which we can resist those historical erasures
Join us for the launch of our December 2016 issue, 39.4 "This Body's Map", edited by Chelene Knight. There will be readings by Jen Sookfong Lee, Chantal Gibson, Beni Xiao, and Nefertiti, as well as an artist talk by cover artist Samantha deVries-Hofman. Entry by donation.
On Friday August 19, Room celebrated several exciting new ventures including a reading to announce our forthcoming fortieth anniversary anthology (to be published March 2017 and launched at the first ever Growing Room: A Feminist Literary Festival in Vancouver). The rooftop was stellar, the readings were amazing, and the ambiance was one of a kind. As the sun began to set, the warm air carried these beauiful voices across the roof and over the city. This was a spectacular evening.
Congratulations to the winners of Room's 2010 Fiction, Poetry, and Creative Non-Fiction Contest!
Our sincere thanks to everyone who submitted their work. Look for first and second place winners in issue 34.1, coming to newsstands in late winter.
