Our upcoming issue 36.1, Mythologies of Loss, is so full of reviews of books by Canadian women that we ran out of room to publish this list of what Room's editorial collective (affectionately called Roomies) are reading. So, to help you warm up on a winter evening, here's our reading-list of books by Canadian women:
Sin, wrongdoing, injurious acts, murder, deceit, contraband. Poison, theft, larceny, lust, fraud, family and foreclosure. It is not a CRIME to admit that we love to read it all. This is your chance to become a CRIME writer.
For the first time in its 35-year history, Room will investigate CRIME in an issue of chillingly good writing about seriously bad things. We are looking for CRIME poems, non-fiction, and short stories: shameful and heroic, terrifying and grand, falsi and injuria, noir and passionnel. We are also looking for frightfully powerful art.
Room invites you to arrest us with your unconventional hardboiled-detective manuscripts, thrill us with your feminist-fatale tales, and inspire us to break some laws with your vignettes of crimes big and small.
But first, we want to know, Can poetry go noir?
Room is excited to reveal the winners of our annual Fiction, Poetry, and Creative Non-Fiction Contest! First prize goes to Menaka Raman-Wilms for fiction, Kelly Cooper for poetry, and Alison Frost for creative non-fiction. Winners will be published in issue 36.2, on newsstands summer 2013.
Room is in its 35th volume and that calls for celebration! We are very pleased to invite you to join us at our 35th Volume Party on December 9th at 3pm at the Roundhouse Community Centre in Vancouver.
If you've got a great piece of writing that's ready to go, submit it for issue 36.2, to be edited by Clélie Rich. 36.2 is our 2013 summer issue. In addition to showcasing the winners of Room's 2012 contests and the winner of Room's inaugural Readers Choice Award, we will be featuring renku from Yoko's Dogs, and an interview with Elee Kraljii Gardiner of the DTES's Thursdays Writing Collective. All the usual submission guidelines apply.
Deadline: October 31, 2012
We are pleased to invite you to attend the launch event for Room 35.3: Duality on the evening of October 18th at 7pm at the W2 Media Café.
A hardscrabble climb
up the hillside,
The man who loves you
is nothing but a ghost.
He walks through walls,
his name on your mouth like prayer.
