42.3 Sports

From tales of team triumph and heartbreak to the draw (and drawbacks) of a culture of competition, editor Meghan Bell and assistant editor Chelene Knight invite you to submit your best poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, and visual art about sports culture and athletics. We want work that will make us sweat and cheer. Send us your best stories about women and non-binary athletes, sports fandom, alternative sports (e.g. theatre sports, e-sports—surprise us!), and how sports culture can intersect with violence and toxic masculinity. We also encourage submissions that are critical of sports culture, such as how athletics and fan cultures privilege certain bodies over others. Underrepresented writers—including but not exclusive to women (cis and trans), trans men, Two Spirit and non-binary writers who are Black, Indigenous, people of colour, queer, and/or disabled—are particularly encouraged to submit.

This issue will feature new work by author and paralympian Arley McNeney.

Deadline: January 31, 2019

Before submitting, please read our About section to see if your work fits within Room's mandate, then refer to the Submission Guidelines on how to format your work.
