This film encompasses everything I love about the cinema. The stylistic elements of choppy cuts matched with a voice-over lets the viewer know that this won’t be your typical high-school drama. And it delivers! Leaving behind tired melodrama, Handsome Devil instead plays to the dialogue we all longed to have in high school. This film is frank and open.
Echoing the cinematic flare of films like Me, Earl and the Dying Girl, Handsome Devil shows the complicated nature of being a teenager without overplaying its hand. What’s more, the student-teacher dynamic brings a sense of sympathy and understanding, further elevating this heartwarming film.
The Vancouver Queer Film Festival runs from August 10 - 20, 2017.
Handsome Devil will play again on August 20, 2017, 7pm at the Vancouver Playhouse.
