Getting a peek of an avid reader’s bookshelf is one of life’s simple pleasures. If you’ve ever shown up to a house party and gone straight to the host’s bookshelf, you know how satisfying it is to snoop through other readers’ libraries. The editors of Room love reading (obviously), and we’re giving you a glimpse of our shelves and sharing how we get the most out of our sacred reading time.

Lisa Xing is a career journalist and full time writer. She has worked across the country, from Halifax to Edmonton to Windsor, which is currently home base. Her creative writing has appeared in publications like RoomThe Feathertale Review, Quills, and This magazine. Her photography has been published in This magazine, Wall Street Journal, and 10 magazine out of Korea. Lisa recently travelled to India with Photographers Without Borders to highlight the education of girls and women in rural villages. Lisa has a journalism degree from Carleton University in Ottawa and a masters in the history of international relations from the London School of Economics.

What makes a great reading space?

I read upstairs in my attic. It's warm and gets great light, and is free of clutter.

Do you like to organize or display your books in a particular way?

By topic.

What are your reading rituals?

Making the time is the toughest part. Other than that, make a cup of tea, if it's winter.

“It's Canadian, feminist, and one of my favourite things ever.”
