News from Room
Congratulations to the winners of Room’s 2013 Fiction, Poetry, and Creative Non-Fiction Contest!
Room invites you to celebrate women's strength, vulnerability, and wit this International Women's Day, as we launch our latest issue, 36.1, Mythologies of Loss, on March 8th.
Watch our 36.1 Trailer featuring Christa Couture, Sigal Samuel, Joy Kogawa, Sue Goyette and more!
One of the pleasures of volunteering on the Room collective is getting to read fresh new writing. Along with the over 1200 submissions we receive each year, we often also receive great cover letters that show the writer's understanding of—and connection with—the theme for the issue to which they are submitting.
Our upcoming issue 36.1, Mythologies of Loss, is so full of reviews of books by Canadian women that we ran out of room to publish this list of what Room's editorial collective (affectionately called Roomies) are reading. So, to help you warm up on a winter evening, here's our reading-list of books by Canadian women:
Room invites you to arrest us with your unconventional hardboiled-detective manuscripts, thrill us with your feminist-fatale tales, and inspire us to break some laws with your vignettes of crimes big and small.
But first, we want to know, Can poetry go noir?
Room is excited to reveal the winners of our annual Fiction, Poetry, and Creative Non-Fiction Contest! First prize goes to Menaka Raman-Wilms for fiction, Kelly Cooper for poetry, and Alison Frost for creative non-fiction. Winners will be published in issue 36.2, on newsstands summer 2013.
Room is in its 35th volume and that calls for celebration! We are very pleased to invite you to join us at our 35th Volume Party on December 9th at 3pm at the Roundhouse Community Centre in Vancouver.
We are pleased to invite you to attend the launch event for Room 35.3: Duality on the evening of October 18th at 7pm at the W2 Media Café.
Check out the recent review of Room issue 35.2 on NewPages.com!
Join members of Room and subTerrain for short readings and a literary trivia game August 16th. Win bragging rights and fabulous prizes, including current and back issues of both magazines (Grand Prize: 2-year subscription and amazing swag).
As a reader of Room you probably have long known there is a bias against women publishing in Canada. It's part of our very raison d'être here at Room. If any of us had started to imagine gender gaps in the literary world were closing, a new accounting of reviews in Canadian journals makes for a sobering read.
Our summer issue has been printed and will be arriving on newsstands and in mailboxes very soon! Go behind the scenes with artist Rachael Ashe, whose altered books grace some of the issue's interior pages.
You’re invited! Help us celebrate the launch of 35.2 Shaping the Spark on June 12th at 7pm at the W2 Media Cafe! Our readers include Genni Gunn, Linda King, Solveig Mardon, and Crystal Sikma, all contributors to Shaping the Spark.
