Room Magazine is looking to hire our next Publisher! You have a passion to lift emerging voices in the Canadian literary scene and get excited by developing Room into a robust and resilient organization. You are a dedicated self-starter, who feels comfortable keeping everyone on task and executing the organizational strategic plan. You feel comfortable with numbers and can ably manage budgets. You know your way around a spreadsheet. With one eye on the bottom line, you can help Room engage its community through circulation management, membership programs, grants and fundraising. You are a compassionate leader who can assess risk, empower others and even laugh at yourself when the occasion arises.

Ideally, you’d be familiar with CanLit, the Canadian magazine landscape, and all the creatures found in this ecosystem. As a captain at the helm of a growing non-profit, familiarity with working with a Board of Directors and knowledge of BC nonprofit best practices is an asset. Room is deeply community-focused, and so event or festival planning experience would also be helpful. This job makes frequent use of Wordpress, Quickbooks, Drupal, Submittable and MS Office. We’d love someone who is curious, entrepreneurial and strategic. A keen eye for details would be helpful, from misplaced commas to wonky calculations. Above all, we need an intersectional feminist.

This job complements the Managing Editor, who is responsible for the overall artistic direction and creative output of the Room collective. We need someone who loves people and loves organizations, and is able to operate comfortably within our unique collective and collaborative creative process.

  • Understanding of budgets and financial oversight

  • Execution of organizational strategic plan, in coordination with the managing editor

  • Problem solving skills

  • Effective risk assessment

  • Development and fundraising

    • Experience in grant writing

    • Circulation / membership (we don’t want subscribers, we want members)

  • Passion for developing Room as an organization

Bonus qualities (but not required):

  • Understanding of magazine distribution and business practices
  • Understanding of Canadian literary magazine landscape and literary landscape

  • Competent at Wordpress, Quickbooks, Drupal, Submittable, MS Office

  • Self-starter, entrepreneurial, curious

  • Festival or event planning experience

  • Data and file management

  • Board experience / governance experience, knowledge of BC Societies Act

Room is Canada’s oldest feminist literary journal, and has published fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, art, interviews, and book reviews for forty years. Published quarterly by the West Coast Feminist Literary Magazine Society, also known as the Growing Room Collective, Room showcases writing and art by women (cisgender and transgender), transgender men, Two-Spirit and nonbinary people. We believe in publishing emerging writers alongside established authors, and because of this, approximately 90% of the work we publish comes from unsolicited submissions or contest entries.

Works that originally appeared in Room have been anthologized in The Journey Prize Anthology, Best Canadian Poetry, Best Canadian Stories, and Best Canadian Essays, and have been nominated for National Magazine Awards.

We envision this job as full time with compensation of $18/hour. Job is based in Vancouver.

Deadline to apply is Friday, May 29th.

Please send resume and cover letter to Jane Hope, Board President at
