The results are in! Congratulations to the following artists on winning Room’s fourth Cover Art Contest! You can find the first place winner’s work on the cover of our very next issue, 42.2 Borderlands, and the second place winner featured in the same issue. We want to give a huge shout-out to our judge Syrus Marcus Ware for going through the pool of submissions and determining the shortlist and winners. Cover Art Winners
1st place: “Prefix, Untitled P1” by Farihah Aliyah Shah
Farihah Aliyah Shah is a contemporary lens-based artist based in Bradford, Ontario who holds a BFA in Photography from OCAD University. Shah’s practice explores issues of racial identity, constructed and natural landscapes, personal and collective memory, and private and public spaces. Her work has been exhibited in Canada and abroad.
2nd place: All That Glitters/Say Her Name by Marisol Diaz
Marisol Diaz graduated from the Highschool of Art & Design in NYC, is a Painting & Sculpture major from Antioch College and has an M.F.A. from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Marisol is a multidisciplinary artist tackling universal women’s issues yet speaking specifically to her Puerto Rican Diaspora.
Honourable Mention: Twins by Amanda Chwelos
Amanda Chwelos is a young Canadian artist living in Edmonton, Alberta. She received her diploma in Fine Art from MacEwan University in 2017, and will be completing a Bachelor of Fine Art in from the University of Alberta in 2019. Chwelos’s current practice is based in painting and 3D rendering.
