Room's 2018 Short Forms Contest #2 Winners

Congratulations to the two first place winners and the honourable mention, as chosen by judge Hiromi Goto.

1st Place: “White Spaces Brown Bodies” by Leonarda Carranza

Leonarda Carranza is a Central American born writer who currently resides in the Treaty Lands and Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit. She has been published in Room, The New Quarterly, Briarpatch magazine and Best Canadian Essays 2017. Her essay, “The McGill Experiments” won Briarpatch magazine's 2018 non-fiction contest.

1st Place: “Fan Fiction For the Revolution” by Sarah Ens

Sarah Ens is a writer and editor currently based in Treaty 6 territory. Her poetry has appeared in literary journals such as Prairie Fire, Arc Poetry Magazine, Contemporary Verse 2, and Poetry Is Dead. She is a current MFA in writing candidate at the University of Saskatchewan. Balto, her cat, writes haiku on Instagram.

Honourable Mention: “Baby Food” by Justina Elias

Justina Elias has published in The Puritan, Under the Gum Tree, and elsewhere. She was long listed for the 2018 CBC Short Story Prize and selected as a finalist for Glimmer Train’s 2018 Fiction Open and Narratives spring 2017 story contest. She works at Munro’s Books in Victoria, BC. [Editor's note: This is Elias's third consecutive honourable mention from Room this year!] You can read Elias’s piece through the link above.
