Room's 2018 Creative Non-Fiction Contest Winners

We are thrilled to announce the winners of our 2018 Creative Non-Fiction Contest, as selected by our esteemed judge Stacey May Fowles—novelist, sportswriter, and the author of essay collection, Baseball Life Advice. Please join us in congratulating the writers! Shortlisted pieces can be found here.

1st Place: “Escape Velocity” by Loghan Paylor

Loghan Paylor is an MFA creative writing student at UBC and a former column writer for The Beat Magazine. Their nonfiction work has appeared online at Alterheros.org, Rebelle Society and Tiny Buddha. Loghan lives in Abbotsford, B.C. with their partner, two cats, and one very fluffy dog.

2nd Place: “The Things I Didn't Know” by Nagmeh Phelan

Nagmeh Phelan lives in Toronto with her family. She's a poet ad agency Pisces (that's a thing), and can be found saying nothing of import on twitter @somesomersaults.

Honourable Mention: “Roping It In” by Justina Elias

Justina Elias grew up in Winnipeg and holds an MFA in creative writing from the University of Guelph. She works as a bookseller in Victoria, B.C.. [Editor's note: Elias's submission to the Short Forms Contest was also chosen as the honorable mention earlier this year!]

Thank you to everyone who entered! You can find Paylor's and Phelan's essays in an upcoming issue of Room, 41.4. Our 2018 Fiction and Poetry Contest is now open until July 15th.

“It's Canadian, feminist, and one of my favourite things ever.”
